  Robert W. Laing | International Master Councilor

Bob Laing of Ohio was installed as the 47th International Master Councilor of DeMolay on June 15th, 2013 at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, MN.

Bob is the son of Barb & Kevin Laing of Van Wert, in North Western Ohio. His older brother, Michael, lives in Columbus, OH with his wife Jayme. Bob enjoys time with his niece, Ava, and nephew, Gabriel. Bob graduated from Van Wert High School, and is currently a junior at Miami University of Ohio.
In addition to DeMolay, Bob has been active in a number of organizations. These include Civic Theatre, Boy Scouts (attaining the rank of Eagle Scout), Mock Trial, National Honor Society, Buckeye Boys State, Drama Club, Scholastic Bowl, Band, and Choir. Bob was President of his class for three years and was selected to speak at graduation. Bob is active in his church youth group, works as a mass server, a lector, and an extraordinary Eucharistic minister.

Bob attended Wright State University while still in high school before attending Miami of Ohio. Bob’s goal is to complete his undergraduate education at Miami and then to attend Dental School, ultimately to return to Van Wert and practice with his father as a fourth generation dentist.

Bob joined Van Wert Chapter Order of DeMolay on August 20, 2005. He was initiated at a statewide ceremony, and became very excited and interested in emulating the young men of the state council. Bob served his chapter as in a variety of offices and still serves as Almoner. In 2006, the brothers of Van Wert chapter elected Bob to serve as Master Councilor. In 2010, they reelected him to that position and he and his chapter earned the Past Master Councilors Meritorious Service Award. Bob attributes the Ohio DeMolay Leaders of Excellence Training Conference for giving him the tools that have allowed him to advance. Bob served the Ohio State Council as Chaplain in 2009-2010, Deputy State Master Councilor in 2010-2011, and State Master Councilor in 2011-2012. For the past year he has served as Region IV Cabinet member.
Bob is a Representative DeMolay, holds the Lamp of Knowledge, has the Founders Membership Award, and earned a Blue Honor Key with a Star for sponsoring twenty new members. Bob was honored with the degree of Chevalier, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by Ohio DeMolay in 2012.
“DeMolay offers so much to young men that membership in DeMolay should be a coveted goal of all worthy men between the ages of 12-21 years. Our goal is to spread the good news of DeMolay so that the world will be aware of our good work. DeMolay must become a household name!” explains Bob.

Brother Laing is very excited to work with the International DeMolay Congress and DeMolay members around the world to improve the fraternal experience for all DeMolays. He wants to use the position of IMC to assure that DeMolay leaders at every level have the resources they need to secure what is best for the members at the chapter level. Serving the individual member, and helping them to have the best DeMolay experience is what this is important. Bob wants to share his DeMolay story, and is always interested to hear the concerns of members so that he can help them achieve their personal goals. Brothers helping brothers = DeMolay. DeMolay offers the totally unique opportunity to young men of any interest group to pursue that interest and to share their success with their DeMolay brothers.

  Christopher M. LaBaw | International Congress Secretary

Christopher LaBaw of New Jersey was installed as the International Congress Secretary of DeMolay at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, MN on June 15th, 2013.

Chris was born in Mt. Holly, New Jersey on August 14, 1992. He attended Florence Township Memorial High School in Florence, New Jersey. There, he played soccer in the fall and participated in their spring musicals. During his senior year he founded the Half Mile High club where members designed, built and flew radio controlled airplanes. In 2010, he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in his local Boy Scout troop. He currently attends Burlington County College, majoring in Communications, where he enjoys working with the college’s radio station, Z88.9.

Chris joined Delaware Valley Chapter on November 13, 2004 in Riverside, New Jersey. After serving his chapter as Master Councilor in the fall of 2007, and appointed State Senior Steward in 2008. He progressed through the elected state line serving as State Scribe, State Senior Councilor, Deputy State Master Councilor and finally serving as the 63th State Master Councilor of New Jersey in 2012-2013.

Chris holds the Representative DeMolay, Lamp of Knowledge and was honored with the Degree of Chevalier. He considers himself very fortunate to have been able to spend some of his past summers learning about DeMolay and spending time with his brothers at various Leadership Training Conferences including the Region 1 Leadership Training Conference in 2007, KeyMan Conference 2010 and the Garden State Leadership Training Conference in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

A quote that Chris has always tried to remember while in DeMolay is that "One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team"

  Justin T. Cargill | Region I Congress Cabinet Member

Justin T Cargill of Massachusetts DeMolay was installed as the Region 1 Cabinet Member at the 46th DeMolay International Congress in Minneapolis, MN on June 15th, 2013.

Cargill has lived in Grafton, MA his entire life and attended Grafton High School. He is currently enrolled at Quinsigamond Community College where he’s majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. He hopes to graduate with an Associate’s Degree next year and go on to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell for his Bachelor’s degree.

Justin joined John Eliot DeMolay in the fall of 2008. He took his Initiatory Degree on 10/23/08 and his DeMolay Degree on 11/13/08. He became Master Councilor in January of 2011. In June of 2011 he helped start the newest charter chapter in Massachusetts DeMolay, Benjamin Franklin DeMolay. His new chapter was the fastest charted chapter in Massachusetts DeMolay history. He was their Master Councilor for a year before being elected State Junior Councilor in August of 2012. Benjamin Franklin’s membership tripled from 9 to 27 members under his leadership.

Justin is a 3-time PMC-MSA, holder of the Lamp of Knowledge, Representative DeMolay, Founders Award, Blue Honor Key, Distinguished Service Award and the most coveted Degree of Chevalier.

His vision for Region 1 and all of DeMolay is for its membership to become “Brothers without Borders” and enjoy the brotherhood that can only be found in the greatest youth organization in the world, DEMOLAY!

He looks forward to bringing his experience and enthusiasm to the membership of Region 1 and beyond.

  Ryan E. Vander Horn | Region II Congress Cabinet Member

Ryan Vander Horn of New Jersey was installed as the Region 2 Cabinet Member of DeMolay at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, MN on June 15th, 2013.

Ryan was born in Hackensack New Jersey on October 19th, 1994. He attended Roxbury High School in Roxbury New Jersey. At Roxbury Ryan participated in DECA and JSA and played soccer and lacrosse for the school. Ryan is attending Rutgers University as a freshman in September and plans on pursuing a double major in Business and Sociology. After college Ryan plans on attending law school.

Ryan joined Kenneth E. Hendrickson Chapter in Dover, NJ on October 19th, 2006 on his twelfth birthday. Ryan stepped into a leadership role in the chapter almost immediately progressing through the official line to reach the office of Master Councilor by the young age of 14. Ryan was installed as Master Councilor in June of 2009. Ryan served two consecutive terms as Master Councilor of K.E.H Chapter and earned the PMC-MSA in the process. From there Ryan went on to serve New Jersey DeMolay as the District 1 Master Councilor for the 2010-2011 term. The following year Ryan won a contested election for the office of State Scribe in NJ. Part way through the 2011-2012 term Ryan was moved up the line to the office of State Junior Councilor. Ryan then went on to serve as State Senior Councilor for the 2012-2013 term and currently serves as the State Master Councilor of New Jersey DeMolay. Ryan holds the Representative DeMolay, Lamp of Knowledge, Blue Honor Key, PMC-MSA, Chevalier Degree, Lone Warrior award, and was recently made an honorary member of Excalibur chapter in Bayonne, NJ. Ryan has attended many DeMolay leadership conferences which he accredits much of his success to. These conferences include: Region 1 Leadership Training Conference in 2007, Garden State Leadership Training Conference in 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012, Great Plains DeMolay Leadership Conference 2012, and KeyMan Conference 2012.

One of Ryan’s favorite quotes that represents his feelings towards DeMolay is “The future is not something we enter. The future is something we create.”

Ryan is ecstatic to have the opportunity to work for DeMolay on the regional and international levels. Ryan looks forward to working for the betterment of the order which has give so much to so many young men and hopes to serve the members of DeMolay to the best of his ability.

  David L. Hasting | Region III Congress Cabinet Member

David Hasting of Tennessee was installed as the Region 3 Cabinet Member of DeMolay at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, MN on June 15th, 2013.

Br. Hasting was born and raised in Portland TN. He graduated from Portland High School and is currently attending the University of Memphis with a double major in Criminology and History with the intent to work as a criminologist for the Federal Bureau of Investigation one day.

Br. Hasting was initiated in C.E. Hendricks Sr. Chapter on October 27, 2006 in Hendersonville, TN. He has served in a variety of leadership positions within DeMolay. During his term as Master Councilor of his Chapter he earned the Past Master Councilor’s Meritorious Service Award. He went on to serve Tennessee DeMolay as District Master Councilor, Illustrious Commander of the Tennessee State Priory, and State Senior Councilor. He will be installed as State Master Councilor of Tennessee in the Summer. Br. Hasting has earned the Representative DeMolay and the Lamp of Knowledge. At the 2013 session he was elected to receive the Degree of Chevalier.

When asked about his vision for DeMolay, Br. Hasting replied that “While DeMolay is DeMolay International we still have areas where there is division between different chapters, states, regions, and countries. I would like to see this become more than just DeMolay International. I want to see us become DeMolay United.I hope during my service as Region 3 Cabinet Member I will be able to provide a bond between the different jurisdictions in my region. I would like to see the members of Region 3 being able to communicate, plan, and execute events together to help promote and build brotherhood not only in their own jurisdiction, but throughout our region and internationally.”

  Sandeep S. Atwal | Region IV Congress Cabinet Member

Sunny Atwal of Indiana was installed as the Region Four Cabinet Member of DeMolay at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, MN on June 15th, 2013.

Sunny Atwal was born on December 9, 1993 in Detroit, Michigan. He and his family moved to Indiana where he grew up. Br. Atwal graduated from Ben Davis High School in 2012. While attending high school, Br. Atwal was involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including Theater, National Honor Society, DECA, The Ben Davis High School Television Program, and the Speech and Debate Team, which he went on to captain. Br. Atwal is currently a sophomore pursuing a bachelors in English Education at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Sunny Atwal joined Speedway Chapter May 16th, 2006 in Castleton, IN. In the summer of 2011. he was elected to be chapter master councilor. Atwal challenged his chapter and himself to making Speedway DeMolay a better chapter by pursuing the Past Master Councilor’s Meritorious Service Award (PMC-MSA). With the help and hard work of all of the dedicated members and advisors, Speedway DeMolay was successful in achieving that prestigious award. In 2012, Indiana DeMolay awarded Br. Atwal the Distinguished Service Award (DeMolay of the Year) and elected him to serve Indiana as their State Senior Councilor. Br. Atwal has earned the Founder’s Membership Award and was elected to receive the Degree of Chevalier.

Br. Atwal’s hope is that we can spread the message of DeMolay so that "One day every dinner table discussion will include two topics: Dessert and DeMolay."

When asked about his view on DeMolay, Br. Atwal shares: “I know how much DeMolay has meant to me and all the things that it has done for my life. It wouldn't have happened if I didn't get lucky and have a friend introduce me to it. I could have easily not gotten to the position I'm at now and things would be entirely different. I can't wait to meet all the DeMolays I can and try to motivate and inspire them to do things they believe are out of their reach.”

  Stephen C. Mattox | Region V Congress Cabinet Member

Stephen Mattox of Wisconsin was installed as the Region 5 Cabinet Member of DeMolay at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, MN on June 15th, 2013.

Stephen was born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin on November 26th, 1994. Br. Mattox was very involved in music and sports. He played the Trumpet, Violin, Piano, Guitar, various Percussion instruments and sang in choir. Stephen attended Culver Military Academy for 7 Summers and was awarded a scholarship to attend the Culver U.S. Honor Naval Academy for 3 Summers for his musical talents. While at Culver, he was an active participant in the Naval Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Honor Drum Corps. At his final year at Culver, Stephen was promoted to the rank of Unit Commander of the Naval Band. In addition to music, he played Basketball, Football, Volleyball, and ran Track. He graduated from Wilmot Union High School in 2013. Stephen is currently pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts at Milwaukee Area Technical College. Afterwards he plans to transfer to the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee to pursue a Bachelors Degree in business and political science.

Brother Mattox joined Sir Galahad Chapter on November 28th 2006 in Burlington, WI. One year later he decided to plural his membership to help out in DeMolay to Kenosha Chapter in Kenosha, WI. In 2009, he was first elected to the office of Master Councilor. He went on to serve anadditional four terms in that office. He was later appointed to the office of District Master Councilor in 2010, elected to State Councilor in 2011, and finally State Master Councilor of Wisconsin DeMolay in 2012. Stephen decided to further his career in Masonry by being raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on May 4th, 2013.

Br. Mattox has been honored with a number of awards from DeMolay International. He has earned the Lamp of Knowledge, over 9 gold Merit Bars, the Founder’s Membership Award, the Blue Honor Key, the Representative DeMolay Award, and the Past Master Councilor Meritorious Service Award (PMC-MSA). In 2012 the Supreme Council honored Br. Mattox with the Degree of Chevalier During Stephen’s years as a State Officer he has revitalized the communications system for Wisconsin DeMolay. He is the proud publisher and editor of the DeMolay Today newsletter. Also, Stephen and his fellow State Officers have started a series of State Officer Webcasts to advertise events and other important information.

When asked about his vision for DeMolay he shared the following; “We always hear how DeMolay used to be a household name and it was a privilege to belong to such a great organization. Well today when we talk about DeMolay or are seen wearing our “DeMolay gear” people don’t know what DeMolay is. We must take pride in our fraternity and be able to communicate the passion we feel in our hearts for DeMolay with our brothers, advisors, friends, and the community as a whole. Lastly, we need to take advantage of this amazing opportunity that we have to make a positive and transformative difference in someone’s life.”

Stephen is very excited to bring his skills to the table as Region 5 Cabinet Member and looks forward to making his Region a very active one on the International, State, and Chapter level while working for the 47th DeMolay Congress.

  Garison D. Carrell | Region VI Congress Cabinet Member

Garison Carrell of Oklahoma was installed as the Region VI Cabinet Member of DeMolay at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, MN on June 15th, 2013.

Garison was born in Seminole Oklahoma on September 7th, 1993. He graduated from Seminole High School in 2012 with honors and ranking in the top 10%. He is a member of National Honors Society, was team captain for the Academic Team at Seminole High School, and was a four year squad member for the tennis team. To further his education Garison is attending the University of Oklahoma seeking a Bachelors of Business Administration with a major in Finance and minor in Nonprofit Management. Garison became a Master Mason on February 23rd, 2012 and is currently serving his lodge in Yukon, Oklahoma as Senior Deacon. He attends First Baptist Church in Seminole Oklahoma.

Garison D. Carrell joined Excalibur Chapter on January 16th, 2009 in Yukon, Oklahoma. Brother Carrell went on to become Master Councilor at Excalibur’s first installation on May 29th, 2009. Later he was elected to State Junior, State Deputy Master, and State Master Councilor in 2010, 2011, and 2012 respectively.

Brother Carrell has received numerous awards and honors during his DeMolay career. He has earned two PMC-MSA’s for service to Excalibur Chapter in 2009 and 2010 as well as two Blue Honor Keys having been the first-line signer on 20 new members. He was honored with the Degree of Chevalier in 2011 at Oklahoma’s Conclave where he also won the L.V. Orton Memorial Scholarship.

Garison States that his “favorite DeMolay event is by far Great Plains DeMolay Leadership Conference” and that he looks forward to attending and serving on staff every year.

When asked to make a statement about DeMolay Brother Carrell says: “DeMolay through its over 90 year history has helped influence and shape the lives of young people. I am fortunate to have been inducted into this great worldwide movement and to have become one of the young men DeMolay has helped shape. I can honestly say I would not have the life skills, friends, and self-confidence I have acquired, had it not been for the mentors and lessons I have received because of DeMolay.”

  Timothy Dougherty | Region VII Congress Cabinet Member

Timothy M. Dougherty was installed as the Region VII Cabinet Member of DeMolay at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 15, 2013.

Timothy was born December 16, 1994 in Encinitas, California. At age 3, he and his family moved from Michigan to Phoenix, Arizona where he currently resides. He graduated from Shadow Mountain High School in May 2013. He is currently a student at Paradise Valley Community College and is pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Aerospace Engineering through a transfer to a state university. He was a 4 year member of the Air Force JROTC Group at Shadow Mountain and performed a variety of duties, including being a Cadet Lieutenant Colonel and the Cadet Group Executive Officer. Also, he was part of a championship Color Guard team for four years. He was a shot put and discus thrower for his high school track team for three years as well.

He joined Paradise Valley Chapter at age 14 on December 5, 2009 and received both degrees that day. He served as the second official chartered Master Councilor of his chapter 9 months into being a member, and just after leaving office, he was elected to Deputy State Master Councilor. He was installed the Arizona State Master Councilor on July 21, 2012.
He is looking forward to the privilege to working with the leadership of the DeMolay Congress and working for the young men of DeMolay in moving our organization forward.

  Kyle N. Kimmey | Region VIII Congress Cabinet Member

Kyle N.Kimmey of Northern California was installed as the Region Eight Cabinet Member of DeMolay at the 46th DeMolay Congress in Minneapolis, MN on June 15th, 2013.

Kyle was born in Sacramento California on October 22, 1992. Kyle has lived there with his loving family all his life. He attended Choice Charter School for High School and graduated in 2010 with a 4.0 GPA. At Choices he was a member of the Student Leadership Program, a member of the School’s Advisory Council, a member of the Safety Committee and a volunteer at many fundraisers and events at the school. Kyle is currently part of an internship program working toward his goal of being a Project Manager. Kyle is devoted to his family, DeMolay and serving humanity.
Kyle joined the San Juan Chapter Order of DeMolay in Citrus Heights California on July 28th, 2005 and received his DeMolay Degree August 27th, 2005.

Kyle began his leadership career with DeMolay by being elected Master Councilor of the San Juan Order of DeMolay in September 2008. His Chapter relocated to Roseville California on January 1, 2009, where he was elected to a second term as Master Councilor that March. Kyle started his service to the Valley Division by being appointed to Valley Division Junior Councilor in September 2009. Kyle was elected Senior Councilor of Valley in November 2009. In November 2010 he was elected to serve as the Master Councilor of the Valley Division. In 2011, Kyle dedicated his time to strengthening and serving Roseville Chapter. In November 2012 he was elected Senior Councilor of the Northern California DeMolay Association.
The Jurisdiction of Northern California has honored Kyle twice with the Distinguished Service Award in both 2008 and 2009. For his dedication and service to the Order of DeMolay Kyle was honored by being elected to receive the degree of Chevalier on June 18th 2011.

Kyle sees a quote by John Quincy Adams “If your actions inspire others to learn more, do more, dream more and become more; then you are a leader” as his vision for DeMolay.

Kyle looks forward to continuing to learn and sharing what he has learned with his fellow DeMolays. Kyle’s goal has always been to grow and strengthen DeMolay and looks forward to working with his fellow DeMolay to continue that effort.
