Each Chapter is required to make Obligatory Day observances.
But when are they? What kind of activities are suggested for the day in question?
This article is here to help answer those very questions.
The next two Obligatory Days upcoming are My Government Day and Educational Day.
Over the last few years, revisions have been made to the Rules and Regulations as to when an Obligatory Day has to be observed. The information presented in this article reflects some of those changes which as of yet are not reflected in the Leaders Resource Guide.
Also, it should be noted that your Executive Officer has the power to change the date of any Obligatory Day. If you should have any questions as to when an Obligatory Day is supposed to be observed in your Jurisdiction, please contact your Executive Officer.
MY GOVERNMENT DAY
My Government Day is to be observed on
a day convenient to the chapter in July. To quote the DeMolay International Rules and Regulations, on My Government Day:
"On My Government Day it is the duty of each Chapter to arrange a program at which the members may learn about the government of the country in with the Chapter is located"
Here are some ideas we came up with:
- Have a speaker come in and talk on the operation of the government
- Spend the day with city or county officials
- Tour City Hall and attend a city council meeting
- Recognize a government official and present them with a plaque or certificate
- Visit the State Capitol
- Host a government awareness day and invite the public
- Participate in your local 4th of July Parade or celebration
EDUCATIONAL DAY
Educational Day is to be observed on
a day convenient to the chapter.. To quote the DeMolay International Rules and Regulations again, on Educational Day:
"On Educational Day it is the duty of each Chapter to arrange a program that will tend to emphasize the value of an education and the fact that the public school is a bulwark of liberty and must be maintained."
Some ideas we'd like to suggest are:
- Arrange with the Superintendent of Schools to take a definite part in National Education Week
- Arrange a talk by a prominent educator to discuss the importance of education in today's world
- Hold a Teacher's Night - invite teachers and administrators early in the school year to foster understanding of our organization
- Take a tour of a local college
- Have a presence at a local schools organizational fair
- Host a dinner for all the kids who made the honor roll
- Hold a fundraiser and donate the proceeds to a local school for new computers or other learning equipment
